Luther The Fallen Sun is a movie version of the BBC’s acclaimed Luther series that was originally aired between 2010 and 2019. Starring Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo and Dermot Crowley, this new release hits cinemas on February 24 and debuts on Netflix on March 10.
The film is written by Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne. In it, Luther is reunited with his nemesis, Alice (Ruth Wilson).
Idris Elba
A gruesome serial killer terrorizes London while John Luther (Idris Elba), the brilliant but disgraced detective, sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture a cyber psychopath, he breaks out of prison, determined to solve the case by any means necessary.
The crime drama ran for five seasons on BBC, with Elba winning two Golden Globe awards for his role as the embattled detective. He also received four Emmy nominations, along with 11 nominations from the Royal Television Society.
In 2019, the fifth season of Luther ended with a dramatic climax that saw the detective sent to prison after years of breaking the law in order to catch bad guys. Netflix’s new Luther movie picks up some time after that, focusing on the disgraced detective as he makes his way back to the Serious Crime Unit, ready to hunt down a notorious killer who’s been threatening the city of London for years.
The film features a cast that combines actors from the TV iteration with new stars. Jamie Payne directs, based on a script by series creator Neil Cross. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready and Dan Finlay are producers on the project, alongside Cross, Elba and Priscilla Parish.
Dermot Crowley
Dermot Crowley is a veteran of the original Luther series who reprises his role as Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk in the new film. It’s a welcome return for the actor, who’s been a staple of British stage and screen for years.
Elba and Crowley are the first major cast members announced for Luther: The Fallen Sun, which is written by franchise creator Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne.
Elba also serves as a producer alongside Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready.
In this follow-up to the acclaimed BBC crime series, the ruthless former police detective escapes prison only to find himself on the trail of a twisted new case. Along with his ex-boss, DSU Martin Schenk (Crowley), and tough cop Odette Raine (Erivo), Luther tries to track down tech mogul serial killer David Robey.
Cynthia Erivo
Erivo has earned a lot of accolades over her career. She’s won a Tony Award, a Grammy, and an Emmy for her work in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple. She also starred in the Steve McQueen film Widows.
Her upcoming projects include Disney’s live-action retelling of Pinocchio, as well as Universal’s film adaptation of Wicked. She also launched a production company, Edith’s Daughter, in 2020.
